Many new smart phones come with large screens, but that doesn’t mean that the print or images are easier to see. These applications are available on the Apple iPhone to allow individuals with vision impairments to live more independently.
Sendero GPS LookAround for the iPhone announces the current street, city, cross street, heading and nearby points of interest. Available in the App Store for $4.99.
DaisyWorm is a simple yet powerful DAISY audio book reader supporting the 2.02, 2002 and 2005 formats with full or partial audio. Features include fast forward and rewind with user specified time intervals, bookmarking with automatic save, and easy to recognize icons. Note that variants of the DAISY standard such as Bookshare and NIMAS are not currently supported. Available in the App Store for $3.99.
Digit-Eyes Audio Scanner and Labeler lets you use your printer and off-the-shelf labels to make audio labels that your iPhone plays back or text labels that are voiced to you. It also reads manufacturer’s UPC and EAN codes and tells you what the item is. Available in the App Store for $29.99.
Lou Zoom allows you to see magnify your contacts list for easier reading. Each contact’s name is enlarged to the full width of the screen. Once you click on a contact, their detailed information will be magnified. Also allows you to change the contrast to white print on a black background. Available in the App Store for $1.99.
