As winter comes to an end and we finally start to see the first signs of spring, we will most likely want to be outside more often, soaking up the sun while enjoying various physical activities. This may seem like a natural progression from one season to the next, but for an individual with a physical disability, transitioning from the activities of winter to those of spring requires a considerable amount planning. Just because an individual may require a wheelchair for mobility does not extinguish the desire to be active outdoors.
Some might argue that the one defining sport of the spring season is golf. As you can imagine, playing golf in a wheelchair can be an arduous task. An individual in a wheelchair may not be able to easily hold or control a golf club. They may not have a full range of motion for their swing and they may find it difficult to move from one hole to th next. Luckily one company, Golf Country, has designed a golf club that provides a disabled golfer with more control of their swing and better control over the golf club and their game.
The Adapta-Club is a golf club specifically designed for the disabled golfer. Its unique, patented design has a flatter head than conventional golf clubs. This enables the golfer to strike the ball more solidly since the club’s sole and hitting surface club head lies in a more parallel position to the ground. In addition, the club has flexible graphite shaft that can be adjusted to a more comfortable position for a person in a wheelchair. This design feature allows an individual in a wheelchair, who is lower to the ground, to maintain some control of their golf swing.
The Adapta-Club gives an individual in a wheelchair the opportunity to be out in the sun while participating in a physical activity. As more and more sports and activities have been made accessible to include people with disabilities, it is good to see that a game as popular as golf is following suit.
