New and Innovative way to access news content!

For those who may not be able to read printed material due to a visual, physical or learning impairment there is an exciting new way to access printed publications. Not only is this innovative; it is a free service provided by the National Federation of the Blind (NFB). The NFB-Newsline offers access to printed newspapers, magazines and television and job listings through any touch-tone telephone, over the Internet or downloaded to a digital talking book or MP3 player.  They currently have over 300 publications and the number of participating papers is growing. There are also five Spanish language newspapers available to all subscribers.

To access the NFB-Newsline you will need to register and have access to a touch-tone telephone. To get an application to register for this service you can call the National Federation of the Blind at 1-866-504-7300, contact your state’s Library for the Blind- Indiana Residents can contact the Indiana State Library at 317-232-3684 or 1-800-622-4970, or download the application here. http://www.nfb.org/Images/nfb/documents/pdf/newslineapp.pdf.

Once you have registered, you will receive an ID number and security code to access this system. You can then call the NFB-newsline at 1-888-862-1629 or a local number if available. This service is accessible throughout the United States 7 days a week 24-hours a day. Upon calling, you will first choose a category from the main menu and then you are able to choose a newspaper, magazine or topic using the telephone prompts. Subscribers can also choose from the current day, day before or most recent Sunday edition of the newspapers if published. Subscribers can also personalize their page by creating a favorites option where they can save 6 newspapers.
