The League’s Amazing Challenge

The League for the Blind and Disabled’s mission is to provide and promote opportunities that empower people with disabilities to achieve their potential. The vision of League is the inclusion of all people with disabilities in all aspects of community life. All League programs and services are designed to assist people in acquiring skills, knowledge and support they need to function at his or her highest level of independence. The League also advocates for the needs of people with disabilities.

  •  individual and systemic advocacy,
  • independent living skills training,
  • individual and group peer support,
  • information and referral services,
  • community based youth services program,
  • white cane and public transportation travel training,
  • adaptive equipment services,
  • services for older citizens who are blind or visually impaired,
  • volunteer services,
  • Braille production services,
  • sign language interpreting & case management for people who are Deaf & Hard of Hearing,
  • in-home personal care and homemaker services,
  • free community room space to groups that are working to benefit the community.
On Saturday, September 8 2012 The League is hosting a program called the Amazing Challenge. Thirty teams of four will race in downtown Fort Wayne to complete challenges that represent different disabilities. For example, a blindfolded challenge represents blindness. Other competitions involve wheelchairs and hearing impairments. The cost is $60 per team.  The challenge takes place from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The After Party is happening from 2p.m – 4 p.m.  If you would like additional information, email cherylg@the-league.org.
