Sesame Enable was founded by a computer vision expert and an electrical engineer who is a quadriplegic for the last 7 years. Sesame’s vision is to allow and promote independent living for persons with disabilities.
“Computer Vision” is the science of having a computer understand what the camera sees. What Sesame does is utilize the simplest camera, found in the front of virtually every mobile device, to detect and track the user’s actions. By bringing this advanced technology to the disabled domain, many solutions can be tailored for people who suffer from various disabilities. And by utilizing the simple camera found in the device, costs can be cut drastically compared to other solutions that require additional hardware.
Sesame works with many disabled bodies including rehabilitation hospitals, independent living centers, disability organizations and more. There is already an eReader that allows for hands-free page turning (dubbed SesameReader), which is being used by many patients. And soon a fully hands-free operated smart phone will be available for those who cannot operate their hands.
SesameReader is an eReader app for Android from Sesame Enable, which allows for hands-free reading. Using the device frontal camera, pages are turned using slight head nods either from side to side, or top to bottom. Once set in place, the user can read independently for as long as he desires.
This application is already being adopted by major rehabilitation bodies around the world. The application uses the frontal camera found in virtually all Android devices, and with advanced vision algorithms tracks the user’s head to facilitate hands-free page turning. The app is configurable in all aspects, and is demonstrated in this video.
