4 Popular Posts from 2017

At the end of every year, I like to take time to reflect on everything I’ve written about over the past 12 months.  Instead of discussing 100+ articles, I’d like to select only a handful.

The following list consists of articles with the most views as well as popular assistive technologies of the year.  Before continuing, please note that this is not to say one assistive technology is better than another.  What works well for one person may not work well for someone else.

4 Popular Posts from 2017:

1. Fidget Cube:

2017 is the year fidgets became high-demand.  With the wildfire popularity of fidget spinners, fidgets quickly became powerful tools for individuals of all abilities.  If you’re new to our blog, you may be unfamiliar with what a fidget product is.  Many individuals with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and more resort to fidgeting as a means of relaxing and focusing.

The Fidget Cube is the ultimate fidgeting tool.  The Cube is six-sided, with each side providing its own unique fidget:

  1. Click
  2. Flip
  3. Glide
  4. Breathe
  5. Spin
  6. Roll

2. Think Ink Pen:

Okay, okay.  I promise this list won’t consist of only fidgets (maybe…)  The Think Ink Pen is a pen with an array of built-in fidgets which allow users to discreetly fidget whenever, wherever.

With the Think Ink Pen, you can:

  1. Flex: the stainless steel flexo shaft features a spring-like resistance which allows you to bend the pen
  2. Spin: the “invisible force of rare-earth magnets creates a floating, silent spinner that you can push and pull for additional fidget fun”
  3. Slide: the silky-smooth rotation of the carbon-steel sphere satisfies one’s urge to click his or her pen
  4. Twist: the unique detachable flexo clip doubles as a standalone fidget tool with “Rare earth magnets that allow you to easily detach and reconnect the clip”

3. RE-vibe:

As promised, I’m going to discuss other items that aren’t fidgets.  Although this next item isn’t a fidget, its objective is to help the user focus.  RE-vibe is an anti-distraction wearable that gently vibrates to keep the wearer on task.  It discreetly reminds people to check and correct their own off-task behaviors.

The band’s “proprietary algorithm empowers users by sending quiet vibrations at strategic intervals to remind them to check and correct their own off-task behaviors.”  Additionally, the algorithm will switch up variables to reduce chances of the wearer getting used to the reminders.

Features of RE-vibe include:

  • Created by a school psychologist
  • Ideal for both students and adults
  • Rechargeable battery: charges via micro-USB wall charger
  • Available in different wristbands:
    • Buckle Bands: one size fits most
    • Velcro Band:
      • Small: 11.5 cm-14.5 cm
      • Regular: 14.5 cm and up

4. Wristocat:

It’s no secret that working at a desk all day can cause a lot of strain on your body.  If you spend several hours on a computer, it’s advisable to create an ergonomic workspace.  Over the years, we’ve discussed multiple ergonomic solutions such as desks, keyboards, and computer mice, but never anything like the Wristocat.

The Wristocat is the “first and only wrist support that uses a friction-free magnetic barrier to enable precise, cat-like movement and absorb repetitive stress.”  The Wristocat moves with the user and comfortably supports every move.

Features of Wristocat:

  • Uses magnetic technology to float user’s hand above fatigue and stress
  • Allows users to effortlessly alternate between mouse, keyboard, and touchpad
  • Smart, innovative design forms a therapeutic magnetic barrier that eliminates friction and resistance while user works
  • Keeps user’s wrist straight and fingers relaxed
  • Promotes good posture by guiding movement

Every year we see an array of new assistive technologies available. What I enjoy most about assistive technologies is the versatility of every device, app, and product. We cannot wait to see what 2018 introduces.
