Since 2010, Easterseals Crossroads has been offering Gadget Camp on the beautiful campus of Butler University. Gadget Camp is where young people with disabilities, who use augmentative communication devices and other assistive technologies, are able to make new friends, work on communication skills, and participate in fun and engaging activities. Gadget Camp also offers parents and caregivers a respite opportunity during often busy summer schedules.
During camp, we do many fun things and have varied types of entertainment. The kids get the opportunity to get up close and personal with animals they may never encounter through the Silly Safari program. We have several singer songwriters play music for sing alongs and dancing. We do crafts including painting with Cookies and Canvas. We even have a water day where we take the campers fishing on the canal and later that day have a water balloon fight.
If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity, we are looking for volunteers for Gadget Camp. We pair our campers with at least one volunteer that will assist them with activities and be their buddy for the day. Camp will be Monday, June 24th-Friday, June 28th from 9am-3pm. We would love people to volunteer all week, but welcome volunteers even for the day.
For a glimpse into all the fun we have, here is a short video from last year’s camp:
I can easily say that Gadget Camp is my favorite week at work during the year. Every year we have parents tell us that this is the first break they have had in years or how grateful they are to be able to provide a camp experience for their camper who could not attend a typical camp. For those who volunteer, they tell us how happy they were to be a part in bringing so much joy to the kids.
Here is a short video on what volunteers could expect:
If you would be interested in volunteering this year, please email me, Nikol Prieto, for more details and to complete volunteer paperwork.
