Believe it or not, the image above is not from a science-fiction film. This is a senior working with DreamFace Technologies’ social robot, Ryan, which is proving to enhance mood, reduce cognitive decline and improve mobility for older adults — among other benefits.
Through artificial intelligence, Ryan is able to recognize emotions, engage socially and interact physically. He’s suitable for a wide variety of interactions, whether chatting with a senior in their apartment or leading a yoga class in their community.
As DreamFace founder Dr. Mohammad H. Mahoor said, the company “could have more than 100 Ryans working in assisted living communities by 2027.”
Ryan serves such caregiver functions as providing medication reminders, testing seniors with brain teaser games, playing music and narrating photo albums to help jog their memory, etc.
However, Ryan serves needs across all ages. In fact, DreamFace has partnered with Boulder Learning Inc. to test Ryan’s functionality as a tutor for students with autism and other cognitive disabilities, who often have difficulty communicating in traditional learning environments.
As a social robot, Ryan is designed partly for anyone who lives alone, thus serving various demographics.
